Join us for a talk with Joanna Choi Kalbus, author of The Boat Not Taken, a memoir that tells the story of her and her widowed mother’s journey from North Korea to make a better life in the United States. It’s also the story of a divided Korea, whose colonization by Japan and devastating 1950-54 civil war had consequences that reverberate today. Above all, The Boat Not Taken is a love letter to Joanna’s mother: a daughter of rural Korean gentry, fiercely devoted yet destructively deceptive to her child, whose shocking secret Joanna learns on a trip to her homeland after her mother’s death.
